Annweiler celebrates its traditional chestnut festival, highlighting items and products made from chestnuts, Saturday and Sunday.

The City of Annweiler/Trifels will celebrate its annual chestnut festival Saturday and Sunday.

More than 30 market stands will be set up on Rathausplatz, where vendors will offer their merchandise from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stores will offer a special shopping time from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

This festival will highlight the chestnut. Usually, chestnuts are grown only south of the Alps. The Romans once brought the tree to the wine-growing areas in the Pfalz. Thanks to the mild climate in the Palatinate Forest and in the area around Annweiler, called Trifelsland, conditions for chestnut trees to grow are excellent. During the chestnut harvest time, from Oct. 1 to Nov. 15, regional restaurants, cafes and wineries will serve special menus made with chestnuts, such as soup, chicken with chestnut vegetables, rump steak with chestnut crust and chestnut mousse with orange sauce.

During Annweiler’s chestnut fest, visitors can taste a large variety of food and beverage specialties made from chestnuts: bratwurst, dumplings, bread, cake, crepes, marmalade, honey, ice cream, liquor and beer.

The crowning of the 11th chestnut princess, Melanie I, will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday in front of the city hall.
Musical entertainment will be provided in the afternoon on both days on the festival grounds, and children can enjoy rides on a merry-go-round.
