The culinary walk will lead hikers through the vineyards near Freinsheim. The walk starts tonight and continues Saturday and Sunday.

The wine growing community of Freinsheim will offer its annual culinary hike along its wine hiking trail today through Sunday.

The 7 km long trail is located southwest of Freinsheim and leads through two vineyards called “Oschelskopf” and “Schwarzes Kreuz,” or Black Cross. An ornamented pillar made of sandstone from the 16th century showing the crucifixion scene is what gave the wine hiking trail its name.

The event will start at 6 p.m. today and will include 20 drinking and eating stands along the route. Hikers can taste wines, sparkling wines and juices made by local vintners. There will be international and regional culinary specialties including coconut milk soup with cilantro and lemongrass, goat cheese with fig mustard, marinated giant scampi with spaghetti salad, oriental lamb pot, goulash soup, meat dumplings with horse radish, potato dumplings with sauerkraut, fresh oysters, potato pancakes with apple sauce, potato soup with salmon, pumpkin soup, onion cake, waffles, crepes and more.

After the sun sets, a fireworks display will illuminate the vineyards.

Saturday and Sunday, Wine Princess Anne II will officially open the event at 11:30 a.m. at the historical town hall.

The wine stands will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. today and from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Local stores will be open for Sunday shopping from 1 to 6 p.m.

The old part of town will be closed to motorized traffic. Visitors coming by car are asked to park outside of town. The center is only a short walk away.

From the historical town hall, hikers should walk on Hauptstrasse, turn onto Breite Strasse and then pass the Hain Gate after 50 meters. They will then need to turn left onto Friedhofstrasse and then walk straight to reach stand No. 1.

If starting from the train station, hikers need to follow the arrows on Franz-Lind-Strasse, turn right to the gatekeeper house, then turn right again to get to stand No. 1 after 50 meters.

To get to Freinsheim, travel on A6 toward Mannheim; take the Gruenstadt exit; and then follow the signs to Kirchheim, Dackenheim and Freinsheim.
