A medieval curtain wall and Baroque buildings will set the stage for the annual Stadtmauerfest, or town wall fest, today through Monday in Freinsheim.

This traditional wine fest will lure visitors to both sides of the 1.5-km long town wall from the 15th century, which is known to be one of the biggest and nicest town fortification facilities in Rheinland-Pfalz.

There will be 20 different food and wine booths placed throughout the historical wine-growing village. Visitors can stroll along the narrow streets where local vintners, restaurant owners and associations will serve Palatinate culinary specialties and regional wines.

The fest will officially open at 7 p.m. today on the historical Marktplatz. Diverse music groups will perform until 1 a.m.

The Stadtmauerfest will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday and Monday, and at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Numerous bands will entertain visitors with various music styles in different locations.

The old part of town will be closed to motorized traffic. Visitors are asked to park at the edge of town. From here, they are only a few steps away from the center of town.

Visitors wanting to explore Freinsheim’s historical gates and towers need about an hour if walking along the town wall.

To get to Freinsheim, travel on A6 direction Mannheim; take the Grünstadt exit; and then follow the signs to Kirchheim, Dackenheim and Freinsheim.

The Deutsche Bahn railway company will extend its offers tonight and Saturday night. Trains will depart toward direction Neustadt at
10:53 p.m., 11:40 p.m. and at 12:49 a.m. From Neustadt, passengers can travel on to Kaiserslautern and Land-stuhl. For details on train departures and arrivals, visit www.bahn.de.
