Kaiserslautern’s annual “Swinging Lautern,” Barbarossa fest, will take place Thursday through Sept. 5 in the center of K-town. The local sales promotion agency called “Kaiser in Lautern,” will sponsor, in cooperation with the city of Kaiserslautern, a fest with an international musical program featuring swing, blues, boogie, jazz, soul and salsa.

The streets downtown will turn into open-air stages as well as places including Altenhof, Schillerplatz and Stiftsplatz and will present various musicians and bands.

Kaiserslautern’s Lord Mayor, Dr. Klaus Weichel, and the Kaiser in Lautern chairman, Volker Stephan, will officially open Swinging Lautern at 6 p.m. Thursday on the stage near Stiftskirche.

“We’ll offer some jaunty summer days in our city presenting an amazing musical and cultural program,” Weichel said. “Stores and restaurants will surprise customers with specialties, and numerous local artists will present their works on Martinsplatz.”

Bands performing throughout the three days will be the Top Dogs from Dresden, Tuxedo Swing Bigband, Crew V, The Ballroomshakers, Papa’s Finest Boogie Band, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Flamingos, the Jazz Band Ball Orchestra from Krakow, Poland and many others.

Ensembles of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band will be part of the swinging event as well. The Wings of Dixie will play from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 5 in front of Stiftskirche and the Ambassadors will entertain the audience from 3 to 6 p.m. Sept. 5 on the stage on Schillerplatz.

“We are happy to invite everybody to our successful fest, which has, after 12 years, turned into an inherent part of Kaiserslautern’s calendar of events,” Stephan said. “Besides a great musical program, stores will offer special activities, also for children.”

A kiddie train will give children free rides through the center. Children can participate in crafting, bounce around in a jumping castle and get their faces painted.

Fashion shows presenting this year’s fall and winter collection will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Riesenstrasse. A vehicle display by local car dealers will also be set up here.

Visitors can taste various culinary specialties from different countries in white pagoda tents around Stiftskirche and at food stands set up on Schillerplatz and Altenhof.

A pocket brochure listing the entertaining program is available at the Kaiserslautern Tourist Information office on Fruchthallstrasse, in stores and restaurants or at www.kaiserslautern.de or at www.werbegemeinschaft-kl.de.
