BUFFALO SOLDIERS IS THE NAME GIVEN TO THE ALL-BLACK REGIMENTS OF THE
U.S. ARMY STARTED IN 1866. MORE THAN 20 BUFFALO SOLDIERS RECEIVED THE
HIGHEST MEDAL OF HONOR FOR THEIR SERVICE -THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF ANY U.S.
MILITARY UNIT. THE OLDEST LIVING BUFFALO SOLDIER, MARK MATTHEWS, DIED
AT THE AGE OF 111 IN 2005.

After the German defeat in the Battle of Britain in late 1940, Luftwaffe
Junkers Ju 86P bombers modified with pressurized cockpits began flying
reconnaissance missions over England at altitudes that made them immune
from interception. The British feared the Luftwaffe might begin bombing
England from high altitude, so the British Air Ministry issued
Specification F.4/40 for an RAF fighter to operate at extremely high
altitudes.
