Boy Scout volunteer Stuart Arnold, age 13, launches a “WEBELO” Den heat during the Pack 69 Pinewood Derby held Jan. 23 at Vogelweh Elementary School. Over 30 cars competed during the annual Scout racing extravaganza. Siblings, parents and adult volunteers as well as scouts designed, cut and decorated wooden cars for the competition.

More than 30 young racers faced stiff competition the afternoon of Jan. 23, and not just because their “cars” consisted mainly of wood and plastic. But when the sawdust settled and the last plastic wheel crossed the checkered finish line in the Vogelweh Elementary School gym that was converted temporarily into a four-lane “racetrack,” every boy advanced in his Scouting journey, if not in the “Vogelweh Cup” standings.

This is the 83rd Network Operations Squadron Detachment 4 patch. The 83rd NOS uses their weapon system, known as the cyber security and control system, to ensure 24-hour network operations and management functions and enable key enterprise services and defensive operations within the Air Force’s networks. The CSCS is one of seven Air Force cyber weapon systems and is operated every day at Ramstein.

On any given day, there are threats from the virtual domain which could wreak havoc in the physical world. To help defend against this invisible enemy, Airmen with the 83rd Network Operations Squadron Detachment 4 posess a weapon system that brings airpower to the cyber war.

Staff Sgt. Wilbertson Smith, 423rd Security Forces Squadron patrolman from Royal Air Force Alconbury, U.K., watches as instructors demonstrate a self-defense maneuver during a security forces combative course Jan. 14 on Ramstein. The seven-day course is designed to teach security force members weapon retention and self-defense so they can handle hostile situations using the most peaceful means possible. Though the course is held at Ramstein, geographically separated units send members to be trained as an instructor to be able to spread that knowledge upon their return to their home station.

Any service member who signed up after 9/11 did so knowing that they would likely deploy to a hostile environment. We all do so willing and eager to serve our country with honor. We read the stories of our courageous brothers and sisters standing up for what they think is right and just, and we gladly follow in their footsteps, fueled by inspiration and ready to take on the world.
