Department of the Air Force Pilot Program expands to help more military spouses

Mrs. Amie applied for government employment through a Global Military Spouse Connection pilot program intended to connect military spouse job seekers with local hiring managers. As the Air Force initiative develops, military spouses should work with their local Military and Family Readiness Centers to get more information and connect with the GMSC. A professional in her own right, Kayla Amie holds a master’s in organizational leadership and a bachelor of science in education, and has worked steadily since she was legally old enough to hold a job. But when she married a U.S. Air Force Airman, that professional background no longer guaranteed a career and steady income.

“Every four years you are starting from scratch. I am ok with pivoting but it’s going from the fact that you worked so hard – being a professional – and having it taken away with each move and it not being your choice,” said Amie.

Like many military spouses, Amie faced another military-directed move, better known as a permanent change of station, which meant leaving her job to face uncertain employment or splitting up her family. It is a difficult decision the Air Force and Space Force hopes to make easier through the Global Military Spouse Connection Program.

“PCSing and moving are stressful and take a financial toll on our military families,” said Air Force Personnel Center GMSC Program Manager, Enrique Jones. “It is our hope that this program will help military spouses move more confidently knowing someone is working on barriers to their employment.”

Still a pilot program, the Global Military Spouse Connection Program is currently available only to active-duty military spouses PCSing to select locations, including Ramstein Air Base, where Amie now lives.

“I was losing hope. I thought unemployment was going to be forever, that this was my new reality,” said Amie. “GMSC got my resume in front of a hiring manager who could critically see my skills verses something like an algorithm on USAJobs. So now I had a chance to prove I can do this,” she added.

The Global Military Spouse Connection serves as a bridge between talented Department of the Air Force military spouses and local hiring managers. Using Career Field Administrators, GMSC creates a structured, active pipeline to connect the military spouse talent pool with employment opportunities.

“It’s not just, ‘Here’s a person, here’s a position’ — it’s, ‘Do they qualify for it? Do they have the skills, experience, and knowledge for this position?’” said Wyteeshia McRoberts, Career Field Administrator. “We are assisting hiring managers in finding the best-qualified individual; we’re not contacting them to do favors. We are looking at resumes, seeing what they qualify for, and making recommendations for the right jobs,” she added.

The initiative is a collaborative partnership among AFPC Air Force Civilian Service, career field teams, and hiring managers that taps into an experienced workforce while directly supporting family stability and mission readiness.

“I am just so grateful and think this program is just so needed based on my own experience and from what I hear in spouse networks,” said Amie. “Many of us spouses have a breadth of experience and strong work ethic, we just need to be connected to the right job,” Amie added.
