Q My daughter attends Ramstein Elementary School. During her lunch and recess time, her class, along with other classes, play on the playgrounds. Recently, both of the main playgrounds have been closed off due to rotted wood. They are now forced to play on an extremely small playground.
At one time we counted up to 75 kids on a playground that offers two swings and one slide. The parents of RES are very concerned for our children. Recess is a great release time for our children to play so that they can concentrate on school work in the classroom. I would hate for that time to be taken away from them. Can you please explain what is being done to resolve this?
A Our top priority is the safety of the children and we are taking every measure to ensure their well-being. The original contractor for playground repairs and upgrades unfortunately installed the wrong safety matting, causing delays in completing the work.
Before awarding a new contract, the original contractor was required to remove its equipment; that phase was accomplished in March. At the same time, a bid went out to acquire a new contractor to complete the work. The two playgrounds at RES that are roped off due to safety reasons are among those that are to be replaced or repaired as part of the re-advertised playground project.
The contract was awarded and work is to be completed by Aug. 25,
making all these playgrounds ready for use when the children return for the school year.
