Q I have recently noticed a number of government motor vehicles in the KMC being used for actions I thought were not allowed. Are certain activities allowed overseas that aren’t authorized in CONUS locations?
A I appreciate the opportunity to present the “ins and outs” for using government vehicles. The rule of thumb when determining official GMV use is largely based on the status of the individual – not rank, position or location of assignment.
Generally speaking, permanent party members may only use GMVs for transportation to military appointments or, if approved, to military dining facilities. Unless incidental to an official purpose, stops made to any AAFES, NAF or off-base facility for personal reasons is strictly prohibited.
There is, however, some latitude for transient members when granted GMV use. These members may in fact travel between places of business or lodging, on-base eating establishments, drugstores, places of worship, gymnasiums or any on-base non-appropriated fund activity facilities required for the sustenance, comfort or health of the member. Use of GMVs for transportation to or from any other entertainment or recreational facilities is prohibited.
If billeted off-base, members may only travel to reputable eating establishments within a reasonable distance to the installation.
GMVs are closely controlled because of their easy accessibility, high visibility and potential for misuse. Should you need to possibly report any alleged official use violations, please do not hesitate to contact the 435th Vehicle Readiness Squadron Operations Flight at 480-5534.
