Tuesday, Germans observe “Nikolaustag,” or “Santa Claus Day.” Traditionally, the night of Dec. 5 children will place their boots outside their rooms to have them filled by Santa Claus with candy, cookies, nuts, oranges and little gifts during the night.

Christmas is one of its biggest holiday seasons. It’s so big and special, they actually start celebrating anywhere from four to five weeks ahead of the actual day. Because Germans celebrate Advent, most of the “Weihnachtmarkts,” or “Christmas markets,” start around the end of November.

This is the time for enthusiastic ice skaters to prepare for the opening of the “Kaiserslautern on Ice” season, which starts today. For the seventh year, a mobile ice-skating rink will be set up in the event hall of the Kaiserslautern Gartenschau. The annual ice-skating season will run through Feb. 11.
Walking through grocery stores, shoppers can tell Christmas is only a few weeks away. The shelves are filled with Christmas cookies, gingerbread and chocolate Santa Clauses.
