The warm spring weather has finally arrived. It’s time to enjoy our barbecues and evenings with a fire pit or campfire. Please follow these KMC Fire Emergency Services safety tips when using a grill, fire pit or campfire.
Imagine what it would be like to wake up at night and find your house is on fire. What would you do? Where would you go? Could you get everyone out safely? Do you know that in less than 30 seconds, a small flame can grow completely out of control and turn into a major fire?
How many times have you started dinner and ran upstairs to do a load of laundry or darted out of the kitchen to take a phone call — all while leaving your pots and pans to cook on a hot stove unattended?
Klaus Kueppers, fire protection inspector and acting assistant chief for the garrison’s Fire Prevention program, said these simple scenarios are all too common in many kitchens.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, 38 percent of home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
