More than 30 students from first grade to seniors participated in the first chess tournament Oct. 5 at Landstuhl Elementary Middle School. The tournament was sponsored by LEMS and its Parent Teacher Student Association. First place winners were Blake Webb of LEMS, Nicholas Morris of LEMS and Bobby Austin of Kaiserslautern Elementary School. Other first place winners were Aiden Schulke of KES, Neila Rae Mangiliman of Ramstein Intermediate School, Brodie Case of Baumholder Middle School, and Katheen Julca of Kaiserslautern Middle School. KES will sponsor the next district wide tournament Jan. 9, 2016. If interested in having a chess club at school and for more information, contact Jack Woodfork at Jack.Woodfork@eu.dodea.edu.

Symphony Orchestra performs for LEMS students

The Symphony Orchestra of Kaiserslautern played Hadyn’s 31st Symphony for the students at Landstuhl Elementary School on May 1. Christian Weidt, the orchestra’s conductor, was assisted by Joachim and Johanna Hentschel, whose narration took the students on a musical journey. Led by four French horns playing the main themes, the students accompanied the king on a hunt, followed by a delightful minuet at court.
