***image1***The 21st Theater Support Command chose “lucky” Friday the 13th as the day to officially welcome its new top enlisted leader.
Brig. Gen. Scott G. West, the 21st TSC’s commanding general, introduced Command Sgt. Major David D. Wood during a ceremony Oct. 13 at the Panzer Kaserne Parade Field in Kaiserslautern.

General West remarked that while he knew that he couldn’t make a bad choice selecting one of the 10 applicants he interviewed for the position, he is certain he couldn’t have “custom-ordered” a better fit to lead the 21st team and to become his “battle-buddy.”

“This Soldier has been fired in the forge of discipline and deprivation. He has been tempered by adversity and hardship to become the finely honed implement of leadership that defines exactly what a commander seeks in his command sergeant major,” General West said.

Command Sergeant Major Wood comes to 21st TSC from the 3rd Corps Support Command in Wiesbaden, where he led the organization through two deployments during the past three years.  Mostly recently, during OIF 05/07, he personally went on 169 combat logistics patrols.  He regards himself as a Soldier first and foremost and consequently uses the Soldier’s Creed in lieu of a conventional biography.

“It’s not about me,” he said. “Our focus should be on the warrior sitting in that 10-meter zone in direct contact with the enemy.
He said his challenge will come from enforcing standards and maintaining the focus on basic combat skills, “to ensure these warfighters, our individual Soldiers, are capable to go into a hostile environment and have the confidence in their equipment, confidence in their training and confidence in themselves to win.”
