U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing and 435th Contingency Response Group participate in a simulated base attack and aeromedical evacuation during the Thracian Summer 2023 exercise at Cheshnegirovo Air Base, Bulgaria, Aug. 8. Hosted by the Bulgarian air force, the joint training exercise gave the 86th AW and 435th CRG a chance to test Agile Combat Employment in the European theater.
U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron run a stretcher out the back of a 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft at Cheshnegirovo Air Base, Bulgaria, Aug. 8. The exercise was part of the joint training exercises for Thracian Summer 2023, between the 86th Airlift Wing, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and the Bulgarian air forces. This exercise gave the 86th AES the opportunity to train emergency medical procedures with the Bulgarian air force while going through adverse scenarios.

The joint training exercise gave the 435th CRG the opportunity to practice operations with the Bulgarian air force strengthening the NATO allies’ working relationship while accomplishing critical tactical-training requirements.

This was part of Thracian Summer 2023, a flying training exercise, which allowed the 435th CRG and the 37th AS to practice interoperability with the Bulgarian air force showing the U.S. force’s ability to adapt in dynamic security environments.
