Brig. Gen. Aundre F. Piggee, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, paid a visit to the 773rd Civil Support Team on Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern Feb. 1 to observe firsthand the unit’s capabilities.
The 773rd CST is a chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear detection unit that falls under the 7th Civil Support Command. The 773rd’s mission as part of the 7th CSC is to deploy to host nations and set up CBRN operations in order to detect and report threats.
During the visit, the 773rd gave Piggee a tour of its area of operations, beginning with the medical team’s section where he received a brief on their functions and abilities.
Soldiers of the 773rd CST went on to show Piggee the detection and personal protection equipment they wear and the decontamination area and equipment they use. During this time, Soldiers performed a demonstration on how they decontaminate their equipment and themselves.
“As a leader, that shows me that the Soldier actually understands the equipment when they are able to explain to someone who has never seen the equipment before how to use it,” said Master Sgt. Jeffrey Rutledge, the operations noncommissioned officer for the 773rd CST.
The training we send our Soldiers to is benefitting the Army as a whole, said 1st. Sgt. Rodney Riggleman, the first sergeant of the 773rd CST.
“It was great to have General Piggee come out to see us, and it’s good to see that our higher command is more aware of where we are and of what our mission is,” Rutledge said. “I’m glad the general came out. He was real sociable and seemed down to earth.”
“We are excited that the commanding general, at his level, is interested in what we do,” Riggleman said.
