AFN Kaiserslautern holiday spirit drive focuses on giving

For the 13th year, AFN Kaiserslautern is promoting programs that help make the holidays brighter for children. Today, the AFN team broadcasts live from the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to support the Air Force, Army and Marines with their outreach programs.

This year, the Airman & Family Readiness Center’s Angel Tree program, Army Community Service’s Holiday Assistance Toy Drive and the Marine Corps Toys for Tots effort come together in one place to give community members the chance to bring a smile to a child’s face.

Each program is focused on the holidays, but they have slightly different goals. The Air Force Angel Tree is looking for exchange or commissary gift certificates, while the Army’s Toy Drive wants donations of toys for their Santa’s workshop. Both provide financial relief to families in the KMC. The Marines expand the reach of their Toys for Tots to off-base orphanages in the Kaiserslautern area.

The AFN Holiday Spirit Drive gives the community a one-stop shop for giving. In the eight hours of the live broadcast, community members can stop by the KMCC Food Court to donate to these programs. The commissary will have a special stand with gift certificates for those who wish to donate to the Angel Tree and the base exchange is offering 10 percent off the price of all toys today to encourage giving to the Toy Outreach and Toys for Tots.

One of the new traditions of the Spirit Drive is to offer a place for holiday entertainment, and this year is no exception. The Ramstein and Kaiserslautern Middle and High School bands and choruses will perform throughout the day on a special stage set up in the KMCC Food Court. The day is rounded out by performances from the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. The entire schedule is available on the AFN Kaiserslautern Facebook page.
