***image1***Landstuhl Elementary and Middle School’s second-, third- and fourth-graders recently collected school supplies to help needy children in Iraq. The class collected crayons, pencils, paper, rulers and other supplies.

Each student who donated a packaged item was given a raffle ticket. At the end of the collection period, a name was drawn and that student’s class won a kickball.

The students decided to do this collection because the Iraqi children do not have many school supplies. As one student said, they don’t have a store across the street like we do.

“It’s really good to help these kids because they really need the supplies,” said fourth-grader Joey Martin. “Some people are unfortunate, and don’t have things like we do.”

The students were amazed as supplies came pouring in. More than 170 boxes of crayons, 2,000 sheets of notebook paper and more than 90 packages of pencils were some of the items donated.

In all, more than 175 pounds of goods were collected.
“I think it’s good that we do this because a lot of them have been told that Americans were bad. Now they will see that we are good people,” said Kayla Horan, Landstuhl fourth-grader.
The collection continues throughout the school year.
