Castle turns into stage for jazz music

***image1***The Unnerhaus Culture Club sponsors its annual International Castle Jazz Festival July 21 to 23 at Nanstein Castle in Landstuhl.

The event features traditional Dixieland to big band jazz and blues.
It kicks off at 8 p.m. July 21 with Kevin Duvernay and Mississippi Callin’ presenting well-known songs from New Orleans to Chicago blues.
Also performing that day until midnight is The Jet Set Trio presenting swinging evergreens in different languages and the most successful German blues Band called Blues Company.

In one of the towers (Batterieturm), visitors can enjoy night jazz with the Jet Set Trio.

July 22, the festival opens at 4 p.m. with a jazz band parade. Performers include Tante Friedas Jazzkränzchen performing traditional oldtime jazz from 1910 to 1940, the Doc Houlind Marching Band consisting of musicians from England, Germany and France, the Milano Hot Jazz Orchestra taking the audience back to the “roaring 1920s,” and Les Haricot Rouges, France’s most popular jazz group, presenting Creole hot jazz, Latin-American music and swinging songs.

Night jazz is presented again in the Batterieturm with the Doc Houlind Marching Band.

***image2***July 23 starts with a jazz band parade and the traditional “Frühschoppen,” early-morning beer, at 11 a.m. The bands Milano Hot Jazz Orchestra, Tante Friedas Jazzkränzchen take turns entertaining the visitors. Low Budget and Harald Krüger present rock ‘n’ roll of the 1950s and the Mike & Moro Reinhardt Band perform gypsy swing with Spanish folklore elements. The festival ends at 8 p.m.

It’s prohibited for visitors to bring their own food and drinks.
Food specialties are offered in a tent in the castle yard, in a little wine pub next to the main stage and in the castle café.

Tickets cost €22 July 21, €26 July 22 and €13 July 23. Advance tickets are €4 less. The advance festival ticket for all days costs €42 and €50 at the door. Admission for children under 12 is free.
