Celebrate stamp collecting in October

During October, the majority of Air Force post offices in U.S. Air Forces in Europe will celebrate October as the 31st annual National Stamp Collecting Month and USAFE’s 17th year of participation. APOs will give away more than $28,000 in free commemorative and philatelic products to postal patrons throughout the command.

“Stamp collecting has been called ‘the king of hobbies and the hobby of kings,’” said Lionel Rivera, the Headquarters USAFE/Air Forces Africa/A6XM postal branch public affairs officer. “It is one of the world’s most popular hobbies and one that brings enjoyment to young and old alike, no matter what their station in life.”

It is a fascinating pastime that is both educational and entertaining, and it is fitting that we spotlight it with special recognition during the month of October.

“The highlight of this program, of course, will be the free philatelic products,” Rivera said.

This year, participating post offices will give away several philatelic items, including the “Art of Disney Magic” print set, “Send a Smile” postcard set and most of the “Marvel Super Heroes” set, such as “Spider-Man” framed art, “Captain America,” “The Hulk” No. 1 print, “Iron Man” framed art and more.

Participating APOs will host a variety of programs involving communities, schools, adults and school-aged children. Check with your local postmaster to see which programs are available.
