General Bishop called the ceremony a celebration of accomplishments and milestones the men and women of the 435th ABW have achieved under Colonel Matthew’s command.

“The wing motto of ‘Swift and Sure’ could not be more accurate for this incredible team,” General Bishop said.

Colonel Matthews attributed the several successes of the wing to four cornerstones:  safety, readiness, personnel and training. He thanked the wing for ensuring these cornerstones were always a top priority.

General Bishop presented Colonel Matthews with the Legion of Merit Medal, second oak leaf cluster, for his leadership and care during his command of the 435th ABW and the 38th Combat Support Wing.

Colonel Matthews has been reassigned to Studies and Analyses, Assessments and Lessons Learned at Headquarters Air Force in Washington, D.C. An assumption of command is tentatively scheduled for July 1 when Col. Donald Bacon will take command. Colonel Bacon currently serves as chief of strategic communications for the Multinational Force in Iraq.
