Peter Gabriel performs on open-air stage in Kaiserslautern

***image1***As host of the Soccer World Championship 2006, the city of Kaiserslautern, in cooperation with the Kammgarn Culture Center, presents preparation events under the motto “Stars around the Ball” in July. Five open-air events take place on the Stiftsplatz in Kaiserslautern between July 7 and 18.
The first event is a movie night with the movie “Das Wunder von Bern,” the miracle of Bern. It shows how Germany, with the help of many soccer players from Kaiserslautern, won the Soccer World Championship in 1954 in Bern, Switzerland. The movie starts at 10 p.m. and the doors open at 9 p.m.
“Kaiserslautern is known for soccer, in the area and across borders and no other city is connected to ‘The Miracle of Bern’ as much as Kaiserslautern,” said Kaiserslautern’s Lord Mayor Bernhard Deubig during a recent press conference. “We try to lure more visitors into the center of town with these open-air events, also to support our local economy.”
The State Opera Plovdiv, Bulgaria, performs the opera “Aida” at 8:30 p.m. July 14. Doors open at 7 p.m. The orchestra, choir, ballet and soloists comprised of about 150 participants present the story of the Ethiopian queen’s daughter, Aida, who lives as a slave in Egypt and falls in love with Radames, a soldier who has to go to war against Ethiopia. Tickets range from 24.70 to 52 EUR.
Events continue with “ABBA Mania,” the best ABBA concert since ABBA, at 8:30 p.m. July 15. The original show from London’s Westend is on tour and lures visitors with 21 ABBA songs. Tickets cost 26.60 to 39 EUR.
The Belgian singer Helmut Lotti and the Golden Symphonic Orchestra perform pop classics at 9 p.m. July 16. Tickets range from 47.80 to 67.80 EUR.
“Is it really him? That’s the question everybody was asking when we announced that Peter Gabriel is one of our open-air highlights,” said Richard Müller, chief of host city events for Soccer World Championship and chief of Kammgarn Culture Center. World-famous Peter Gabriel presents his only open-air concert in Germany at 8 p.m. July 18. Tickets cost 46.20 EUR.
“After a very successful tour in 2003, Gabriel again is on tour, but in Kaiserslautern he presents a special open-air program,” said Ingo Popp from Popp Concerts and Promotion, who in cooperation with the Kammgarn, organized the “Stars around the Ball” program.
Doors to all events open an hour and a half prior to the starting time. Seating capacity is 4,848 and for the Peter Gabriel concert there is standing room for 6,000 to 8,000 people.
