Cultural exchange for the Kingfish

Mix a bit of water, hundreds of swimmers and a team of coaches with a friendly and competitive spirit and what do you get?  A Swim Pentathlon with swimmers from all over the world.

The Kaiserslautern Kingfish Swim Team hosted a Pentathlon meet for several European Forces Swim League teams at the Ramstein Aquatics Center Nov. 8. The meet was attended by more than 230 swimmers representing several teams from Germany and Belgium; within the teams were individuals from other countries around the world.

Tom Brown, Kingfish Swim Team president, described the event as “a warm and welcoming landmark event for the Ramstein Aquatic Center and the international swimmers. Pool personnel made everyone feel welcome.”

The participating swim teams were NATO Marlins International Swim Team, Geilenkirchen Orcas, Shape Seals, Berlin Bear-A-Cudas, Bamberg Aqua Barons and Eifel Sharks. Swimmers came from the Netherlands, Spain, Mexico, Belgium, United Kingdom, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Trinidad and Tobago, and Poland.

Kingfish Swim Team families hosted Berlin swimmers, continuing a tradition started several years ago with many swimmers maintaining close relationships with their host families and swimmers throughout the years.

In a swim Pentathlon, each swimmer swims five events and records times in each of the four strokes – freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and the individual medley. The scores are tallied and then ranked from highest to lowest.
The Kingfish Swim Team’s next competition is scheduled for Nov. 29 at the Ramstein Aquatics Center; they will host the Northern EFSL Long Distance Championship meet.
