What do you get when you mix the French Riviera, two con men (one a seasoned veteran, one a rookie), a common love-interest, a sparkling musical score and a blatant disregard for good taste? Oh, wait. Throw in a hearty dose of hilarity—bawdy jokes, smarmy innuendos, sight gags and delicious parody.  Now, what do you get? The KMC Onstage production of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” that’s what.

KMC Onstage’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” is a wild adventure, and you’ll be thrilled that you checked out this ridiculously funny musical. The story of two unscrupulous, but loveable, conmen (Freddy and Lawrence) who scam rich vacationers on the French Riviera, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” pits the two against an unknown rival—a new conman (the Jackal) in town. Freddy and Lawrence both fall for Christine, an innocent dupe who captivates both their hearts. A secondary romantic plot involves Andre, the French policeman sidekick, and Muriel, an American vacationing divorcee. Song and dance numbers vary from side-splitting to show-stopping—all with riveting choreography.

“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Jeffrey Lane, is based on the film of the same name. The musical premiered in San Diego, Calif., and played on Broadway from 2005 to 2006 winning a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award and numerous additional nominations for both. “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” is being performed by KMC Onstage through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International.

The cast and support staff of 31 actors, director, lighting designer, sound designer, stage manager, costume designer and backstage crew include active-duty Soldiers, Department of Defense civilians and Department of Defense Dependents Schools teachers from the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities.

“I am honored to work with such dedicated people. The actors in this show take a personal responsibility to come prepared to work and have fun,” said director Steven Stanfill. “Not only did I direct the show, but had to add myself to the ensemble of men and choreographed the show. It was a big challenge, but one I enjoyed doing every day.”

“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” opened at KMC Onstage the weekend of May 18 and 19. Upcoming performances take place from June 1 to 3 and 8 to 10. Performance times are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. on Sundays.
