Falkenstein Castle houses medieval market

***image1***Visitors to the Falkenstein castle ruins will be taken back to the 13th century with a medieval fest Saturday and Sunday.

The event features a knights’ camp with knights presenting mock fights. A medieval market with about 30 craftsmen and vendors opens at 10 a.m. each day. There are blacksmiths, turners, potters, glass blowers, stonemasons and painters showing off their craftsmanship. Vendors sell merchandise from the Middle Ages such as clothes, leather items, weapons, jewelry, arts and herbs.
Musicians play on historical instruments and dance groups perform. Jugglers entertain the audience and show off their acrobatic skills. Children can listen to fairy tales, try archery and participate in skill games.

The association for advancement and maintenance of the Falkenstein castle ruins provide food and drink specialties.

The official market opening, with the walk-in parade of participants and tapping the first keg of beer, is 3 p.m. Saturday.

A tavern play, followed by a fire show, is at 8 p.m. The show finishes at 10 p.m.

The play is presented again at 7 p.m. Sunday. The fest ends at
8 p.m.

Admission fee for adults is €5. Visitors in medieval costumes and students pay €3. Children shorter than a sword are admitted free.
A free shuttle bus is available in the Falkensteiner Valley coming from Winnweiler and Imsbach. Falkenstein Castle is north of Imsbach. Travel on B40, past Sembach and Winnweiler, exit at the sign leading to Falkenstein.
