When the Army announced the suspension of tuition assistance, Soldiers lined up outside Rhine Ordnance Barracks’ education center, hoping to enroll in classes before the March 8 cutoff.
Although TA was suspended, more than 100 students registered for seven classes offered locally this term. Now, Soldiers are asking questions about how they can find other funding resources for their education, said Sarah Jones, an education counselor at ROB.
“There’s a mix of the way people are feeling,” Jones said. “They’ve had feelings of uncertainty, of frustration. Others are looking toward alternative funding options.”
On March 29, education center staff at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern will host a financial aid workshop to help answer questions and point Soldiers toward scholarships, grants and other benefits they may be eligible for, said Ramona Kausch, an Army education services officer.
The workshop will be held at Kleber Kaserne, Bldg. 3205, in the transition center classroom. It will be offered in two sessions, one at 9 a.m. and a second at 1 p.m., Kausch said.
The focus will be the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Four days prior, participants should apply for a pin number at the FAFSA site, www.pin.ed.gov. If completed, Soldiers should bring their 2011 and 2012 tax returns with them.
“They should get immediate answers as to their eligibility and how much they would be awarded,” Kausch said.
In addition to federal grants, there are many scholarships, state funding and veterans’ benefits to explore, Jones said.
“It varies for each student, who is eligible for what funding,” said Jones, who is a college financial aid officer. “Come in and let us help you find resources.”
