GACO Corner: Long-term care insurance in Germany

You have left the U.S. military; you are staying in Germany with your family, and you, and your family members are in good health. How nice! Certainly, you’ve taken care of your financial provisions, and your health insurance will pay for most of your treatments.

You are still young, and you do not want to waste a thought about what might happen many years from now or, with bad luck, in the near future.

The team at the German-American Com-munity Office in Kaiserslautern frequently receives requests for support from people whose American spouses have become a long-term patient due to an illness, a surgery or an accident.

Time flies by so quickly! Please take your time and check exactly what your American health insurance will cover and whether it pays for long-term care insurance. Care in a nursing home can cost you several thousand euros a month, depending on your state of health, the amount of care required and the amount your long-term care insurance will pay.

Please consider getting special insurance that will help pay the expenses for care in a nursing home to help avoid financial burden on your loved ones.

Long-term care is a rather complex matter and cannot easily be explained.  The earlier you get long-term care insurance, the less expensive it will be.  However, if you get German long-term care insurance after retiring from the military after decades of service you still may have to pay a considerable amount each month. In the long run, this is better than paying thousands of Euros to the nursing home every month.

The better you are prepared for a case of long-term caretaking in your family, the less burdensome it gets financially.
