German Polizei report several motorists have been caught driving in the wrong direction on the autobahn. Currently, Polizei are trying to identify the motorists and increase safety in the area.

From Nov. 15 to Jan. 17, several motorists, who drove wrongfully in the opposite direction, were reported on Autobahn A62 between interchanges Landstuhl-Atzel and Bann. They caused a danger to themselves and others.

Polizei officials said this is not a new occurrence. In 2013, several wrong direction drivers were noted in Hörnchenberg Tunnel. Luckily, no accidents were caused.

After inspecting the interchange again, the Mobility State Office installed additional observation cameras in both tunnel tubes. Since then, Polizei were able to identify two wrong-way drivers. No accidents occurred, but the motorists will receive serious consequences, including either a criminal charge or suspension of the driver’s license.

Polizei officials again want to point out to locals and U.S. service members that turning on the autobahn is forbidden, no matter what the GPS says. Also, exiting the autobahn is only authorized at exits or interchanges.

Polizei and the Mobility State Office are examining further measures to increase safety in the area of Hörnchenberg Tunnel, including adding additional markings of direction arrows and the installation of special signs at tunnel entrances. One measure is essential in the future: motorists must pay attention.
