***image2***Super sleuths and daring detectives can investigate this summer at KMC libraries by finding clues, solving mysteries and discovering books.

Adventures await readers here at the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern and 435th Services Squadron libraries during the U.S. Forces Europe summer reading program, which begins once school ends in June.

“We (Army libraries) host this program to encourage children to read throughout the summer because it’s the best way to prepare for the coming school year,” said Shawn Friend-Begin, the garrison Kaiserslautern supervisory librarian.

Each week, participating libraries will offer special programs and activities with this year’s theme of “Get a Clue @ Your Library.”

“We will have games for teens to play like “Clue.” It’s all going to be like forensic Crime Scene Investigation kind of stuff,” said Cindy Tews, 435th Services Squadron’s Ramstein library director.

“Kids will keep track of books they read to earn prizes and certificates,” said Meg Tulloch, Installation Management Command-Europe region librarian.

For the past two years, Regina Tiedemann, the garrison’s Child and Youth Services nurse specialist, has registered her children in the summer reading program at the Landstuhl library.

“It gives them fun projects to do and a chance to explore, learn or escape to another world for a short period of time,” she said.

To join, children and their parents go to one of the three garrison Kaiserslautern libraries on or after June 18 to sign up. At this time, they will receive a summer reading program bag filled with a game board, bookmark and activities.

The Ramstein library starts registration June 24 for its preschool, infant to 5 years old, school-age, ages 6 to 12, and teen, ages 13 to 17, summer reading programs. It will host an open house 9 to 10 a.m. June 27 for participants to get their “start-up bag of goodies,” said Ms. Tews.

Start date for each age-specific program will start the week of July 2, and each group will end with an awards ceremony the week of Aug. 12.
