On Aug. 5, 1952, Landstuhl Air Base was opened to become the home base of the 86th Fighter Bomber Wing, in an effort to secure the western borders of Germany via air defense from the spread of communism. This area is now the south side of Ramstein Air Base. Photo by 86 AW History Office
