On, off-base clothes dryer safety

Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. But did you know how critical taking care of your clothes dryer is? With a few simple safety tips, you can help prevent dryer related issues.

There are two different types of dryers used on-base and off-base depending on your location and type of home. Condensed water and vented dryers.

For condensed water dryers, ensure you empty the condensed water container after every drying cycle. Condensed water can cause health problems in people and animals. Please don’t drink it!!

These dryers work more efficiently in cooler environments, so if possible, try to keep the room nice and cool by opening a window.

For vented dryers, check and clean the flexible hose connected to your dryer for lint accumulation at least once a month.

More safety tips:

  • Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.
  • Regularly clean the lint filter.
  • Never place plastic articles in the dryer.
  • Clean clothes dryer lint trap after each use.
  • Keep the area around your dryer clear of clutter like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc.
  • Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry first; then they can be washed and dried as usual.
  • Check the outdoor flap on vented dryers to ensure it is not blocked or covered.
  • Turn the dryer off if you leave your home or when you go to bed.

If you notice that it takes longer than usual for your clothes to dry, please check your lint filter first, and if this doesn’t resolve the problem, please call our Housing Maintenance Contractor at 06371-463-9510.
