Immersed in German

American pupils celebrate Oktoberfest

***image1***Ramstein German immersion students celebrated Oktoberfest in full Bavarian fashion Oct. 5 at the Ramstein Northside Chapel. They wore their Lederhosen and Dirndl and exchanged Lebkuchenherzen − gingerbread hearts.

There are two German immersion classes at Ramstein American Elementary School and one at Ramstein Intermediate School. It was their first Oktoberfest celebration. “In Bavaria, they play a lot of games during Oktoberfest,” said Vivien Kloppel, second-grade German immersion teacher.

So, in true tradition, the children played. They held out liters of apfel juice to test their strength and they made Bavarian cow bells and traditional clothes.
In the three German immersion classes, the children learn all of their lessons in German, including math, science, health and social studies. In the afternoon, they do their language arts lessons in English.
