The Christmas market set up in front of Stiftskirche in Kaiserslautern offers many food specialties and the traditional gluehwein.

Through Dec. 23, the Christmas market in Kaiserslautern is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 to 10 p.m. Sundays. It is set up around Stiftskirche and on Schillerplatz. After the Christmas holidays, it will turn into a New Year’s market from Dec. 27 to 30. The market features more than 40 vendors, food and beverage booths, musical entertainment, a children’s program and various Christmas-related activities.

Vendors sell typical Christ-mas decorations, including tree ornaments, candles, angels, nutcrackers and Advent wreaths. Shoppers will find ideas for Christmas presents, such as wooden toys, leather items, glass products, jewelry and pottery.

Culinary specialties being served include Thueringer bratwurst, pizza, roasted chestnuts, cinnamon waffles and the typical winter drink, “glühwein,” which is a heated red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon sticks.

Around Stiftskirche, there is a bonfire and nativity scene, and artisans and stone sculptors present their works. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Kaiserslautern Zoo shows animals, turning the nativity set into a live scene.

A Christmas bakery invites children to bake their own Christmas cookies with the help of bakers 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 2 to
6 p.m. Sundays.

“We stick to continuity and tradition with our presentations,” said Alexander Hess from the project office for city events. “Our musical program will range from well-known artists such as Rick Cheyenne and Stephan Flesch to brass players and Christmas music from around the world.”

American singer Klyvie Live will present the most well-known English Christmas songs from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the stage on Schillerplatz.

On Saturday, the Cavalry Church Gospel Choir will perform an Advent concert from 4 to 5 p.m., and the band Pina Colada will present current top hits and songs from the 1960s to 1990s from 6 to 9 p.m.

The rock band FUSED unplugged will preform from 4 to 9 p.m Sunday.

Tuesday, Hubertus von Garnier will play rock and soul music from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on Schillerplatz and form 7:45 to 9 p.m. near Stiftskirche.

Rick Cheyenne will entertain with rock ‘n’ roll Christmas songs on Thursday.

The full program can be found in flyers laid out in stores, restaurants, banks and the Tourist Information office next to the Fruchthalle.
