Proving to be one of the closest meets in the history of the EFSL, the 49 Kingfish swimmers netted a total of 80 medals to just edge out the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe team who finished second with 77 medals.
Big winners for the Kingfish team include Betsy, 16, Jeff, 17 and Justin, 15, who each contributed three golds. Mindy, 14, added two golds, and Sarah, 11; Nichole, 16 and Heather, 17, brought in one gold each to help secure the championship.
Steve Genter, a former U.S. Olympic swimmer and gold medalist from the 1972 Olympics held in Munich, presented the medals at the meet.
Kingfish swimmer Katie, 10, said “It was cool to actually hold a real gold medal” after Mr. Genter brought out his three medals from 1972.
The win at the championship meet marked the third straight undefeated season for the Kingfish and the last meet for the team’s head coach Beth Stohlmann.
