It is that time of year again! Job Shadow Day is upon us and we are excited about the possibilities of “Connecting classrooms, communities and careers.” Job Shadow Day is essentially a partnership between the installation and the schools located on that installation. It is designed to give students the unique opportunity of an up-close look at various careers.

Students may “shadow” workplace mentors or accompany their parents at work to experience a typical day on the job. Fortunately, the Job Shadow Day project invites students to witness firsthand how the skills learned in school relate to the work environment.

Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe staff along with their 86th Airlift Wing counterparts and numerous military and civilian organizations will observe Job Shadow Day April 27. Job Shadow Day is also referred to as “Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day.”

Job Shadow Day is a prime occasion to encourage positive relationships between students and the military community.

All Department of Defense Dependents Schools and home-schooled students are invited to participate in various events throughout the KMC in an effort to provide students with the opportunity to see how skills gained in the classroom are applied in a work center. The goal is to help students explore and directly connect the skills and education needed to succeed in current and future career markets.
Job Shadow Day in the KMC gives students a chance to explore various careers beyond what their parents may do for a living.

While living in the KMC students have an advantage over their stateside peers as they can become familiar with the importance of international relations and customs which is an invaluable skill as we progress in a mass globalization effort.

Many units and organizations have enthusiastically volunteered to invite students to visit their facilities. The complete list of participating organizations and units can be found on the sliding billboard of each KMC school home-page or the  Kaiserslautern DSO website at www.kais-dso.eu.dodea.edu.In order for students to participate in Job Shadow Day, a permission slip provided by the school must be completed and returned to their child’s respective school.

Job Shadow Day events will commence at 8 a.m. and will conclude around noon. All students need to be returned to school by 1 p.m. This will allow families time to enjoy lunch together and to discuss their Job Shadow Day experience. If parents would like their students to eat lunch at school, then students must be returned to school in time for their regularly scheduled lunch period. Parents should obtain their supervisor’s approval before bringing their child to the workplace and coordinate with the listed unit points of contact regarding public events that offer a limited number of tours.
