Lt. Col. Lars Zetterstrom, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern, hosted roughly 30 members of the councils of the Union Community Enkenbach-Alsenborn and its associated communities for a tour of Sembach Kaserne April 27.

The community was once the geographic home of the Sembach Air Base flightline. For some visitors, this was the first trip to the installation in decades.

“For me personally, it was very interesting,” said Union Community Mayor Jürgen Wenzel, who led the delegation.

“And it is also very important to maintain this contact and learn about the development,” said Wenzel, who noted he had never been to the administrative area but had visited the flightline in his youth. What remains became an Army installation in October 2010.

In addition to the bus tour through the unit, school areas and former housing area, Zetterstrom took the guests through the newly renovated fitness center and Sembach Community Activity Center.

“All of the services here are important,” Zetterstrom said of the quality-of-life facilities on Sembach Kaserne, noting also the importance of Enkenbach-Alsenborn as the easternmost union community with bus stops for the local schoolchildren.
