***image1***“Kaiserslautern on Ice” starts today in the vicinity of the center of town. A mobile ice-skating rink is set up through Feb. 13 on the parking lot of the Kaiserslautern Garden Fair between Burgstrasse and Lauterstrasse.

The roofed ice skating rink has an artificial ice surface of 20 by 30 meters. There also is a skate rental for those who don’t have their own ice skates and those who need their skates sharpened. In a bistro, hungry and thirsty visitors can take a break and keep watching the happenings on the ice through the transparent walls.
“Besides skating, we also offer an entertaining program,” said Alexander Hess from the project office for events in Kaiserslautern.

“There will be game sessions for the little ones, live music and curling tournaments.”
The opening highlight is a show called “Ice. Light.” In a production with many illusions, artists present the everlasting ice and its natural forces as a counterpart to the burning fire at 5 p.m. today. Eight skaters perform to a video projection. The band Sweat plays funk and soul music afterwards while the “Eiswittchen” skaters from Worms present their skating skills.

“For those who like ice-skating a lot, we recommend the purchase of the ticket that allows admission for 12 times,” said Klaus Hach, director of the Kaiserslautern City Sports Division. “This ticket could be a wonderful Christmas present.”
The skating hours are 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3, 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 p.m. each day.

Fridays and Saturdays, the rink stays open until 10 p.m.
School classes, who would like to move their sports lesson to the ice-skating rink can arrange steady skating times.
