said Heinz Baun full of excitement after a flight from the top of the
Hausberg. “At first I thought it would be difficult, but the
instruction is very good and you get a lot of practice. I picked it up
quite fast.”

Getting a pilot’s license and soaring among the Bavarian Alps in a
paraglider is just one of the many activities available in Germany for
those needing a bit of adventure this summer.

The Alpine Adventures program at Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch
offers tandem paragliding flights as well as paragliding lessons
through the Michael Brunner Gleitschirmschule (paragliding school).

Brunner, who has been teaching the art of paragliding since 1988. “Our
priority is to teach safe handling and flying procedures from the first
day.”

The first block of instruction covers the basics to include safety,
aerodynamics, weather and ground handling. The second and third blocks
build on those basics with additional classroom instruction and
hands-on flights from higher altitudes.

learning the basics and getting a feel for the wing,” said Mr. Brunner,
who provides instruction in both German and English. “The sensation of
flying and having control over your flight is fantastic,” said Mr.
Baun. “The class is fantastic; it’s a great way to start flying without
spending a lot of money.  I can’t wait to do it again.”
