***image1***The Ramstein Rams Ice Hockey Team kicked off the first game of their
2005 season with a 10-6 victory over the Manheim based German team of
S.G. Sturm.

Ramstein’s Merrill Slepica started the scoring with a blue line blast
over the right shoulder of a surprised Sturm goaltender. The Rams
combined for a further five goals before the first period would end to
lead 6-0 after the first 20 minutes. Dustin Johnson netted two of the
goals. Eric Schoenhals, John Hale and Eric Magnuson completed the first
period scoring. Rams starting goaltender Rafael Lezcano never saw a
shot the entire first period as the Rams defense consistently stood up
the Sturm offense at the neutral ice.

Communication and passing miscues suddenly crept into the Rams game at
the start of the second period and the Sturm scored four unanswered
goals to make the score 6-4. Goals were then added by Slepica and Paul
Hilfer to make it 8-4 at the end of the second period.

Hilfer and Schoenhals then netted a goal apiece in the third period.
S.G. Sturm fought hard to make it respectable and added two more of
their own resulting in the final score of 10-6.

Ramstein player-coach John Lane noted that the score appeared a lot closer than the game actually was.

“Our defense of Hilfer, Magnuson, Slepica and John Hoffman was
tremendous and although the Sturm scored six goals they only had 16
shots on our net the entire game. We had over 40 shots on their
goaltender and he was standing on his head while making some great
saves throughout the game.”

The Rams play next Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Zweibrücken Ice Arena. Admission is free to any spectators who would like to attend.
