Ramstein, K-Town take titles in racquetball tournament


***image3***Chalk up three titles for the Ramstein team in the season opening military racquetball tournament Saturday at the Kleber gym.

In the closest final game of the tournament, Ramstein’s Ronald Jones took the Men’s B title by defeating Hanau’s Brian Cornell, 15-13, 13-15, 15-12. Teammate Curtis Morgan took the Men’s 30-Plus title by defeating Heidelberg’s Tim Hardison, 15-6, 15-8.  The Men’s 40-Plus Division was uncontested with the title going to Ramstein’s Margo Castanon.

Kaiserslautern’s Oneda Manning took home the women’s crown by defeating Heidelberg’s Rosi Whal, 15-8, 15-7 in the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Racquetball Invitational Tournament. Teammate James Cook took the Men’s C title by defeating Manning 15-8, 15-6.

Consolation winner in the Men’s B Division was Spangdahlem’s Sergio Santos and in the Men’s 30-Plus Division was Cornell.

Hardison earned the Men’s Open title by injury default. Morgan took second, and the consolation winner was Hamburg’s Peter Rakowski.

Third place in the Women’s Division went to Spangdahlem’s Jen Calhoun, and the consolation winner for the Men’s C Division was Whal.

This tournament kicked off the military portion of the American European Racquetball Association’s season. There are 19 more tournaments – military and civilian – in the AERA season, culminating with the World Championships Aug. 1 to 10 in Kingscourt, Ireland. The U.S. Armed Forces Europe Championships will be held May 10 and 11 on Ramstein.
