***image1***The RAF Ramstein Rogues took on the Trier Rugby Club Nov. 18 in the Rheinland-Pfalz Division III competition and came away with a solid win, 27 to 14.

The Ramstein club, with its 22 plus players, was ready for the match. A light rain kept the field slippery and ball control was affected. But, the scoring started in the first five minutes with Rico Colon kicking a three-point penalty chip shot. Ripping through the Trier defense and avoiding tackles, Ricky Garcia dived for a try-score between the goal post for five more points. Colon, again with accuracy, completed the conversion kick for its two points and  Ramstein had an unanswered 10 to 0 lead.

Trier ruggers responded with a drive around the weak side, scoring seven points. Starting the second half, with only a few substitutions, Trapper Skrypek blazed a hole through tackles, with Colon securing the conversion points.

Ramstein was leading 17-7. But, Trier would not surrender. The team recovered a loose ball and capitalized on open field, showing good determination in scoring and bringing the score to 17-14.

With 15 minutes left in play, a charged down kick found Rogue hands with Chris Bates, who scored with Trier now slipping in points status. Conversion was made by Eric Grace and that sealed the deal on the Rogues win.

“Man of the Match” accolades and recognition was passed to Chris Bates for his speed and running determination, exemplifying quality rugby skill.
