Regional running review: A monthly snapshot of local running events

Let’s face it, most of us are not going to make it to the Olympics or have our picture grace a box of Wheaties, but we do have the chance to enjoy and compete in the local running scene.

Europe, and more importantly Germany, is host to numerous running events that are accessible to every athletic ability and budget. It doesn’t matter the time of year or weather. Our German hosts are out embracing the elements, running and racing.

Most of us probably consider ourselves mid-packers — not too fast and not too slow, just enough to enjoy the sport. When I go on my morning or lunchtime runs, I see you all out there enjoying your 45 to 60 minutes of freedom from the office.

The first 10 minutes are usually the most difficult, however, after a few miles most you are probably happy to have made the effort to get out and do some exercise.
Obviously we all want to do well on our PT tests, but there can be some additional benefits to those lunchtime runs.

Most weekends in Germany offer a host of regional races to choose from if you are up for a little competition. Recently, after scoping out some of my favorite local running Internet sites, I stumbled across the Freinsheim 10K. It seemed fairly close so my wife and I decided to give it shot. For only €8 we were treated to a time chipped picturesque course, with minimal elevation change, set in the

vineyards just outside of the city of Bad Durkheim. Despite the winter weather, the race director executed a professional event with ample restrooms, changing facilities, showers, and route support. Post race finishers were spoiled by a host of cakes and refreshments while age group winners were left with some local specialty wines.

If you are like most runners, experiencing good running events like the Freinsheim 10K can stoke the desire to maybe take a swing at some additional races.
Whether it’s a distance or time goal, running can be a healthy addiction fueled by each runners unique set of personal goals. Though I haven’t previously competed in the following races they have peeked my curiosity and have made my 30 day near term race calendar.

Check them out and see what you think; Saarbrücken half marathon slated to start at the Europa Galerie Mall on Feb. 20 followed by a Neunkirchen 10K on Feb 27. Both are relatively close and could get you out to a city or town you might not have seen yet.

So lace up your running shoes, throw on your favorite running gear and make it a priority to get in some consistent running. I look forward providing you some additional regional running reviews and race suggestions as we move into the more robust spring and summer racing season.
