For more than 700 years, Heidelberg Castle has towered over the City of Heidelberg. The castle was once destroyed by a lightning strike in the late 1700s. Today, and after years of restoration, the castle still sits without several ceilings, walls and doors.

Driving down the “Burgenstrasse,” or Castle Road, a themed route in Southern Germany and the Czech Republic that runs between Mannheim and Prague, one of the first castles you will pass is Heidelberg Castle, the most well-known ruin in the period of romanticism.
