Team Ramstein: Looking ahead to 2011

by Brig. Gen. Mark Dillon
86th Airlift Wing commander

Congratulations Team Ramstein Airmen, for an incredible 2010.

In 2010, the Airmen of the 86th Airlift Wing and 435th Air Ground Operations Wing not only did amazing work in the KMC, but they were also in the fight downrange. We deployed approximately 1,300 Airmen in support of operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and multiple other locations across the globe. Our defenders, explosives ordnance disposal technicians and convoy operators, combined with our other Ramstein Airmen in harm’s way, brought home 11 Bronze Stars, six Defense Meritorious Service Medals, 46 Air Medals, four Joint Service Commendation Medals, 11 Combat Action Medals, nine Army Commendation Medals and one Army Achievement Medal. We owe all of our deployers a debt of gratitude for their tremendous contributions to the fight downrange and the sacrifices they made to achieve them.

Back at home, the 37th Airlift Squadron and 86th Maintenance Group received the last of our brand-new fleet of 14 J-model C-130 aircraft, enabling us to extend our tactical airlift capabilities across three combatant commands.

The 86th Civil Engineer Group began a comprehensive transformation of the Vogelweh Military Complex, which will improve the lives of thousands of families in the KMC.

The 86th Logistics Readiness Group, in parallel with our 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing teammates, supported the surge into Afghanistan, increasing airfield operations and moving more war readiness materiel out the door and into the fight than we’ve seen since Operation Desert Storm. The LRS, alongside the 86th Operations Group, also sent firefighting aid to Russia and Israel when wildfires were sweeping through their countries.

A wide variety of units from the 86th Airlift Wing and the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing built and reinforced partnerships with the militaries in Germany, Macedonia, the Netherlands, France, Bulgaria, Romania, the U.K., the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Norway and multiple countries in Africa. We also established a sister-wing relationship with Poland’s 3rd Airlift Wing, stationed at Powidz Air Base.

The 86th Mission Support Group not only provides world-class support to the entire KMC every day, they also established the ground-breaking Air Force Deployment Transition Center in record time. In just six months, the DTC has already helped prepare nearly 1,000 Airmen returning from combat deployments for their re-entry into life at their home stations.

The 86th Medical Group serves thousands of patients every week, transports our wounded warriors to and from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center every day, and received an “Excellent” rating in their 2010 Health Services Inspection.

Team Ramstein also supported visits from President Obama, the first lady and the secretary of defense. In addition, we had some huge victories improving our processes this year. The 86th Comptroller Squadron saved more than 17,000 man hours by improving finance operations, and we’re continually improving the PCS experience for thousands of incoming families by consolidating our systems, improving our information resources and streamlining newcomer in-processing.

We also celebrated some important milestones. We reached our first anniversary of the newly reorganized 86th AW and 435th AGOW, and our venerated 435th Construction and Training Squadron turned 60. We accomplished all of these things, and more, while executing five operational readiness exercises and performing beautifully in an operational readiness inspection earning us an “Excellent” rating.

As global events evolve in 2011, so must we, to continue providing world-class airlift support to U.S. assets and those of our international partners throughout Europe, Africa and throughout U.S. Central Command. I couldn’t be more proud to serve alongside the fantastic Airmen of Ramstein Air Base. Keep up your incredible work. We are sure to excel in 2011.
