“This is the largest number of volunteers we’ve had since the beginning of this program,” said the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Command Sgt. Maj. Pamela Carmouche.

The Kaiserslautern USO began this annual event in 1999 with assistance from the garrison’s Army Community Service, KMC Sergeants Major Association and commissary vendors.

Bags get the ingredients by the USO donating $2,000 and asking commissary vendors to match or exceed the amount, said Konrad Braun, USO Kaiserslautern director. The KMC Sergeants Major Association provides “the muscle” by packing the bags with all the trimmings necessary for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and handing them out, said Braun.

“It’s a good feeling to see all these volunteers not just from the Sergeants Major Association but from several different units and organizations throughout this community,” said Command Sergeant Major Carmouche. “They have taken time out of their busy schedule to help out with this wonderful program.”

Junior-enlisted Soldiers are referred to the garrison by unit first sergeants and sergeant majors. These referrals are not only based on need, but also on superior performance, said Mr. Braun.

“The true definition,” he said, “is for deserving junior enlisted Soldiers.”
