***image1***With a lot of help from the KMC, the Landstuhl Thrift Store reopens after more than six months of renovations with a grand opening 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 5.
Sponsored by the Kaiser-slautern Landstuhl Spouses’ Association, the store will also have “soft openings” 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Customers can consign items for sale during the “soft openings,” but not during the grand opening.
Changes made to the store during the $42,000 renovations are very significant, said Amanda Nelson, manager of the Landstuhl Thrift Store, located in Bldg. 3818, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.
“We have new doors, windows and blinds, floors, safety locks, an outside storage unit and dressing rooms,” said Mrs. Nelson.
When the store opens its new doors, the KMC will witness the work completed by the Boy Scouts of America, volunteers and ITT Federal Services, the maintenance and repair contractor for the 415th Base Support Battalion’s Directorate of Public Works.
The contractor replaced the locks, doors, windows and flooring, and painted the walls and ceiling.
Andrew, 14, assistant senior patrol leader for Boy Scout Troop 243, helped with the renovations as his Eagle project to earn the highest rank in the Boy Scouts.
“I chose this as my Eagle project because it is a focal point in the community,” said Andrew, an eighth-grader at the Landstuhl Elementary and Middle School. “And, the money that is raised here goes back into the community.”
Volunteering more than 50 hours, Andrew led as many as 13 fellow scouts in painting, moving in and out items, putting up shelves and bookcases, raking and doing outside landscaping, and building two dressing rooms.
Mrs. Nelson said that many other organizations and volunteers helped during the renovations.
The look may be new, but the services and hours provided by the Landstuhl Thrift Store will basically stay the same, said Mrs. Nelson.
Hours are: 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and the second and fourth Saturdays.
