Time for summer reading

***image1***Children throughout the KMC can paw and claw through a summer adventure
starting June 26 at the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern libraries.

That’s when the libraries on Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Miesau
Army Depot and Kleber Kaserne begin the Installation Management
Agency-Europe summer reading program, “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales.”

“We (IMA-E libraries) host this program to encourage children to read
throughout the summer because it’s the best way to prepare for the
coming school year,” said Shawn Friend-Begin, the garrison’s
supervisory librarian.
“Teachers will know right off the bat who has read this summer and who hasn’t.”

The Landstuhl library will have activities for toddler to teens
throughout the summer. The Miesau and Kleber libraries are hosting
toddler and pre-school activities.

“Anyone who can get to one of the three libraries can join our summer reading program,” said Ms. Friend-Begin.

To join, children and their parents stop by one of the three garrison
libraries on or after June 26 to sign up. They will receive a summer
reading program bag filled with a game board, bookmark and a pet
newspaper containing articles and activities.

Children read or have someone read to them and mark a circle on the
game board with an “X” every time they read for 20 minutes. When they
reach a pet reading a book on the game board, they take the board to
any of the three libraries to receive a surprise.

“The kids enjoyed the program last year,” said Regina Tiedemann, whose
children Owen, 9, and Shannon, 6, participated in last year’s summer
reading program for the first time. “They liked being able to pick out
the books, and they liked getting the prizes if they read the books and
reached the spot on the game board.”

Last year, more than 670 children participated in the Army KMC summer
reading program. Ms. Friend-Begin and her staff made 28 visits to the
Landstuhl Elementary and Middle School telling children about the fun
that can be had at the libraries this summer.

The program ends Aug. 11 with a wrap-up party from 10 a.m. to noon at
the Landstuhl library, but Ms. Friend-Begin said the fun of reading
never ends.
