Participants of the Uni-Villa-Hike can tour Villa Denis and Diemerstein Castle Saturday after completing the hike.

The Technical University Kaiserslautern will sponsor a forest hike called “Uni-Villa-Wanderung” Saturday.

The hike starts at the university’s sports field and ends at Villa Denis in Diemerstein. The hike will be 26 kilometers long.

Activities will start with a traditional Bavarian weisswurst breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and a contest in beer mug lifting at the sports field. The hike will begin at 9 a.m. Hikers can stop at some food and beverage stations and test their abilities in throwing bales of straw balls.
Participants, who don’t want to walk for so long can start the hike in Waldleiningen.

From there, the distance to Villa Denis is only 13 kilometers. Free shuttle buses will be available at 10:30 a.m. at the university to take participants to the starting point in Waldleiningen.

The park fest near Villa Denis will begin at 1 p.m. with music, pony riding and rappelling from the castle.  Beverages and barbecue specialties will be served.

Villa Denis and Diemerstein Castle will be open for guided tours. Villa Denis, a historical building, is the former country house of Paul Camille von Denis, who established the first train route between the Saarland and the Rhine River in the middle of the 19th century.

Today, the building is owned by the technical university and used for seminars. Public transportation is available with the train departing Kaiserslautern to the Frankenstein train station. Villa Denis is within walking distance.

Diemerstein is a part of Frankenstein, located on B39, past Hochspeyer. Address for GPS users starting at the university is Paul-Ehrlich-Strasse 28 in Kaiserslautern.
