FASTNACHT/FASCHING/KARNEVAL, STARTING FEB. 16

GERMANY WIDE 

Thursday, Feb. 16. marks the beginning of the Karneval season in Germany. Thursday is referred to as “Altweiberfastnacht” (old wives’ Fastnacht), where witches steal the keys to the city hall and take over command for the weekend. There are celebrations throughout the weekend and the festival culminates on “Faschingsdienstag” (Shrove Tuesday), as Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. 

The largest parades take place on Rose Monday, Feb. 20 in the city centers:

Köln/Cologne, 10 a.m.; Düsseldorf, 12.30 a.m.; Mainz, 11:11 a.m.; Aachen, 11:11 a.m.; Stuttgart, 12 a.m.; Frankfurt, Sunday, Feb. 19, 12:11 a.m.; Ramstein-Miesenbach, Westricher Fastnacht,Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2 p.m., with 50,000 spectators and KMC participation expected. 

DAS DSCHUNGELBUCH MUSICAL (JUNGLE BOOK), FEB. 23 AND 24, 4 P.M.

Turbulent jungle action centering around friends and overcoming limitations. In this energy packed musical, the jungle will come to life, when Mogli and his animal friends take younger and older visitors on an adventurous journey. We Salute You is a AC/DC Tribute Band, which sets new standards in honor of the legendary Australian rock band with its elaborate and authentic concerts. ABTEIKIRCHENKONZERT, (CHURCH CONCERT), MAR. 12, 5 P.M.

ABTEIKIRCHE, OTTERBERG

The first concert in 2023 in the impressive Abteil Church will present a German requiem by Johannes Brahms. The Chamber Philharmonie Mannheim will perform with solo artists Noemi Sohn, soprano, and Klaus Mertens, baritone, accompanied by the choir of the Versöhnungkirche. Classic fans will adore this requiem in seven parts. 

MARCH MARKET “FRÜHLINGSERWACHEN” (SPRING COMES TO LIFE), MARch 12, 1 P.M.

CITY CENTER, KIRCHHEIMBOLANDEN 

The market invites visitors to shop on Sunday, welcome the first colors of spring and enjoy a coffee in rays of sunshine. A creative market with handmade goods will take place in the historic district and children are invited to the bouncy castle and a carousel. 

LÄTAREUMZUG (PARADE), MARch 19, 2 P.M.

CITY CENTER, LANDAU 

The traditional Lätare Parade, which takes place three Sundays prior to Easter will wind its way through the streets of Landau. The colorful parade will start in front of the city hall and end at the large market square. A Hansel thimble game (finger puppets) will be presented, followed by the burning of winter, including a snowman. This tradition is unique to the region along the Deutsche Weinstrasse (German wine road), so don’t miss out on this extraordinary event in Germany!
