ABTEIKIRCHENKONZERT (CHURCH CONCERT)
JUNE 21, 5 P.M., ABTEIKIRCHE, OTTERBERG
Stabat Mater: With his early departure from the opera stage in 1829, Gioachino Rossini composed only larger-scale sacred music alongside chamber music. Among these is the Stabat Mater, which was created in two phases between 1831 and 1841 and premiered in Paris in 1842. The text encapsulates Mary’s grief in the face of the Crucified in a prayer. Rossini unites different forms such as aria, duet, quartet, and chorus, operatic arioso style, and strict a cappella technique into one of the highlights of this genre. After the successful performance of F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Hymn of Praise in 2025, the choir at Bännjerrück is preparing for a special concert in the abbey church: the vocal quartet and the choir are accompanied by a chamber orchestra, following an arrangement by J. Linckelmann from 2016. With the arrangement (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings), the symphonic character is nevertheless preserved.
