Team members from the Joint Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command work to recover missing air crew members at a site in Belgium.

An investigation and recovery group from the Joint Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command is looking for volunteers to work at two sites near Spangdahlem Air Base.

The sites are both bomber crashes from World War II, said U.S. Navy Lt. Landis Fouts, a team leader with the group. Work on the sites continues until Sept. 15.

“Work involves digging and screening or sifting dirt to recover the remains of the missing in action Airmen,” Fouts said. “The job is dirty, but rewarding.”

Volunteers will meet at 7:45 a.m. at the Spangdahlem Shoppette to meet the teams, who will lead them to one of the sites. Work ends around 5 p.m.

“Our work here in Europe relies heavily on volunteer support,” Fouts said.

Volunteers should bring their own lunch, a hat and rain jacket. You must be at least 18 years old and a military ID cardholder. Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis.

To volunteer, email Senior Master Sgt. Wesley McMackin at wesley.mcmackin@us.af.mil.
